September 1957 Introduction
The Lancaster County Historical Society recently conducted a survey of Pennsylvania county historical societies through a questionnaire. The results have been published in the last issue of their Quarterly. The largest county society in the Commonwealth is our own Bradford County Historical Society, with 1,006 (it is now 1,018). To top the societies of the larger counties of Berks, York, Bucks and Montgomery is indeed an accomplishment which I am sure that we all share. But we must keep constantly growing – so HAVE YOU SECURED YOUR NEW MEMBER? Perhaps you can get several. Let us make our society even bigger until we become the largest historical society in Pennsylvania.
We will again begin our fall and winter meetings in September. Watch the newspapers for date. On Thursday, October 31 we will have another Century Farm Award meeting in Towanda. Secretary of Agriculture Henning will be the speaker and will present twenty-one Awards. Place of the meeting will be announced later.
The Tioga County Historical Society at Owego is to erect a new $150,000 home through a bequest. Likewise the Lancaster County Society has just occupied a new $165,000 building and Montgomery a $200,000 building and museum. Yes, people are becoming more interested in our historic past.
