Save Spanish Hill
No opportunity should be lost in the effort to save this notable landmark from the bulldozer. The Hill will be sold as fill for the Athens-Sayre Bypass unless the local people of the Valley and, indeed, the entire county increase their activities to save it.
There are funds available from state or federal sources for the purchase of such landmarks as this. Whether Etienne Bule actually spent a winter here or not, the Hill is an unusual geologic formation and was the site of Indian communal life from prehistoric times.
Spanish Hill is a natural focal point for the teaching of local Indian history. It can also be developed into a valuable tourist attraction.
March 1969 Editor’s Notes
This is the first issue of THE SETTLER to appear since 1961. In 1960, the current series of that period ended with Volume V, Number Three. In 1961 one issue appeared dated January, and described as Volume VI. No more were issued.
With this issue, the Society resumes the printing of studies in Bradford County history and such other related matters as may lend interest and clarification to the local scene from the earliest times to the beginning of World War I.
Manuscripts and illustrative materials are solicited and will be used at the Editor’s discretion. There is no payment for contributions. The Editor and the Society can assume no responsibility for loss but everything submitted will be handled with all care for its preservation.
All correspondence should be addressed to Miss Dawes Markwell, Editor, c/o The Bradford County Historical Society, Towanda, Pennsylvania 18848.
Note: THE SETTLER is a quarterly publication of Bradford County History.
