January 1960 Editor’s Notes
This issue of the SETTLER is dedicated to the memory of Leo E. Wilt, President of the Society from 1941 to 1951 and Director from 1951 to the time of his death on April 18, 1959. We have long appreciated his devoted and tireless efforts on behalf of the Society, but your officers and trustees came to a full realization of all the he had done so well only when they tried to assume his duties. We wish to assure you that we are making every effort to carry on the work of the Society through programs which will be interesting and instructive to our membership, our school children and visitors to the Museum. This letter is in a sense a progress report on what we have been able to accomplish to date.
The Museum on Court Street, Towanda is now open from 10 to 12 and 2 to 4 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Mrs. Leo Wilt will be there to greet you. The redecorating and rearrangement which was in progress at the time of Mr. Wilt’s death is continuing under the direction of Dr. Catherine McCann who has been employed as consulting Director of the Society for the remainder of 1959. It is hoped that in the near future exhibits will be in place at least on the first floor so that the Museum can be open five days a week.
As to the Settler, this issue has been unavoidably delayed. It is our sincere desire to continue its publication, perhaps not exactly in its present form and we welcome suggestion on this matter. We must draw on the talent of our members for future articles and request that they be submitted to the trustees who will for the present set as editors.
Our gratitude is again expressed to our patrons who have supported us through their listings in the SETTLER. Since they have not lately enjoyed publicity through the SETTLER, their listings are displayed on the Bulletin Board in the Museum.
A reminder s to dues, our fiscal year is the calendar year. If you are in arrears, please send your dues for 1959 making your payment to the Bradford County Historical Society and sending it to the Museum, Court Street, Towanda.
We are closing with a plea for the cooperation of every member of the Society. The officers and trustees are anxious to have your suggestions and comments. The future of the Society rests upon an active membership and interested concern so that we may carry on the good work of Leo E. Wilt.
